Tackle Football Leagues in Manitoba

There are presently six tackle football leagues active within the Province of Manitoba which rely on the services of the MFOA. These are the:

  • Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS);
  • Canadian Senior Football League (CSFL);
  • Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL);
  • Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL);
  • Manitoba Major Football League;
  • Manitoba Midget Football League;

The Manitoba representatives in the CIAU are the University of Manitoba Bisons, which is the only university based tackle football team in the province. The Major and Midget leagues are community based and operate within the cities of Winnipeg and Steinbach. The Winnipeg High School league consists of high school teams from both the City of Winnipeg and Western Ontario (Kenora, Dryden, Fort Francis).

In addition to these leagues, there exists an association of leagues for younger players between the ages of 7 and 14 years, known as the Manitoba Minor Football Association (MMFA). However, the MFOA provides no services to that league at the present time.

Each of the leagues has responsibility for a particular age group of player. As well, the level of play in each league dictates the number of officials who are assigned to work each game at those levels.

League Age Group Number of Officials
CIS (University) University students 6
Senior 23+ 6
Junior up to 22 years 6
High School High School students 5
Major 18 to 21 years 5
Midget 15, 16, and 17 years 5

Officials are assigned to work games at each level based on experience, training, and individual performance.
